The Shelby Junior High grapplers place four in the finals at the Havre Middle School Invitational this past Saturday.
The first big test for the junior high wrestlers proved to be successful for the young squad. The tournament was divided into two age groups; 5th and 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade.
In the 7th and 8th grade bracket, the first Shelby wrestler in the finals was Shaun Salveson, the lightest Coyote at 85lbs. After a first round quarterfinal bye, Salveson wrestled Drake Berreth of Chinook and won in convincing fashion by fall in 2:36 in the semis. This placed his squarely in the finals against Jeffery Colesworthy of Conrad. After a long and bloody match Colesworthy was the victor winning over Salveson by major decision 14-2.
The next wrestler was none other than Cameron Brusven at 110lbs. Cameron's first opponent was Hunter Combs of Conrad. Brusven made quick work of the Cowboy pinning him in :30. In the semifinals, he would face off with Shawn Gilkerson, one of the many kids from the Malta squad. Again, Brusven would win in dramatic fashion winning by fall in 3:51. In a familiar spot in the finals, Brusven was slated to wrestle Ethan Marceau of Browning. Cameron outlasted his opponent to win by fall in 3:44 giving him the 110 championship medal.
Rowdy White has experienced a lot of success this season so far. He went 5-0 at the Choteau Duals and then 3-0 at the Valier Mixer. Prepared and ready, White would start his day off with Kaleb Young of Conrad in the quarterfinals. White wasted no time and pinned his opponent in :33 placing him in the semifinals against a tough opponent in Randy Tommerup of Havre. Rowdy proved that nothing was getting in his way on the road to the finals winning by major decision 9-0. In the 125lb championship, White would meet up a familiar foe in Austin Vanek of Cut Bank. White's winning ways would be put on hold as he lost by fall in :46 against the Wolf.
The last Coyote to see himself in the parade of champions was Sahkaia Wehr at 130/140 combined weight class in the 5th and 6th grade brackets. Wehr got there by first defeating David Sharp of Browning by fall in 1:13 in the quarterfinals. He would then face off with another Browning wrestler in Sonny Derouche in the semifinals. Wehr would establish his dominance winning by fall in 2:42 only to meet up with yet another grappler from Browning Wynn Wells. Wehr outlasted Wells and pinned him in 4:15 in the championship bout giving the first place hardware.
Other honorable mentions from the weekend include: 7th grader Aidan Torgerson at 120lbs placed 4th, 8th grader Matthew Riehl at 165lbs placed 5th, 7th grader Jacob Kingsolver at HWT placed 4th, 6th grader Joey Riehl at 110lbs placed 5th, and 6th grader Trenton Emerson placed 3rd at 115lbs.
The 7th and 8th graders placed 8th as a team and the 5th and 6th graders placed 7th. There were 13 teams in attendance.
The junior high squad will have a busy week. They will be traveling to Big Sandy on Thursday for a mixer at 5:00pm, then will be hosting a mixer on Friday with wrestling to slated to begin at 4:00pm, and then to Browning for a tournament on Saturday.
