Content:        
Spanish 1 introduces students to the specific culture and to the four basic language skills:  listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.  Students acquire skills through oral repetition, dialogue, storytelling, short composition, dictation, reading and written exercises.

Expectations:                        
·         Come to class every day, on time.
·         Students are expected to participate in class activities and exercises.
·         Follow oral and written instructions.
·         Complete all homework assignments within specific time.
·         Students are expected to treat each other with respect.
·         Be prepared to work independently or in small groups.
·         Students are expected to work hard and have fun learning Spanish.

Skills Taught:           
·         Vocabulary and common phrases related to:  1) Alphabet 2) Classroom Objects 3) Clothing 4) Colors 5) Daily Activities 6) Days, Months, Dates & Time 7) Family 8) Foods & Beverages 9) Greetings, Farewells, & Personal Information 10) Numbers 11) Places & Locations 12) Seasons & Weather.
·         Grammar acquired through context.
·         Correct pronunciation and intonation.
·         Culture of Spanish speaking countries, with emphasis on Spain and Mexico.

Methods of presentation:
The majority of class work will be speaking individually, in small groups, and to the entire class. Grammar and vocabulary will be presented and acquired using the methodology of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling).  An interactive textbook on CD ROM will be used occasionally to emphasize a grammar or culture point. Students will also be taught how to read and write at their appropriate level in Spanish.

Activities Include:
·         Conversation
·         Cultural activities, celebrations, customs

·         Vocabulary and Grammar skills presented in context via TPRS

Spanish 2 furthers the study of grammar and vocabulary and increases the understanding of the culture through movies, videos and magazines.  Students improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  Students begin to develop reading comprehension skills through short stories, plays and poetry.

Spanish 3 reviews basic grammatical structures and continues the study of grammar, vocabulary and culture.  Students further develop skills in understanding reading, speaking and writing through short stories, poetry, articles, oral presentations and written exercises.  Students will read one unabridged work.

Content:        
Spanish 4 is taught almost exclusively in Spanish.  It explores topics in advanced composition and conversation with an emphasis on refining and integrating advanced grammar into daily communication.  Emphasis is placed on comprehension as it is spoken by native speakers.  Students develop appropriate verbs, structures, vocabulary, idioms and cultural understanding necessary to perform communicative functions at the advanced level.
