Special Olympics

Other than family members, few people grow closer than teammates. Somehow, that common pursuit against the odds, that shared moment of victory or defeat, brings even the most diverse people together. Special Olympics Unified Sports® brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities - people of similar age and athletic ability – who train and compete on the same teams. Shelby recognizes Special Olympics Montana as a mainstream sport. This means that students from our school who participate in Special Olympics Montana can letter and receive credit for their efforts. Shelby Life participates in unified bocce, track and field events, cycling, snowshoe, basketball, and bowling. All Coyotes have an opportunity to participate regardless of ability. Shelby Life requires a minimum of 8 weeks of practice or 10 hours to qualify for all state level competitions.

Special Olympics Montana is an athlete-centered, family-based, volunteer-driven and sponsor-supported movement with 2,000 athletes registered in 121 programs from 65 Montana communities. Our local program currently serves students and adults from Shelby and the surrounding area. If you are interested in receiving more information about participating with Special Olympics Shelby Life Program please contact Allie Stockburger with Special Olympics Montana.

Our Administration and School Board have worked with Special Olympics Montana to develop a positive relationship that provides individuals with and without intellectual disabilities opportunities to create friendships, learn new skills, and demonstrate their leadership on and off the court.

Special Olympics Montana also provides school enrichment opportunities for teachers. For more information on this four part video series celebrating communities of inclusion please visit our website by clicking here.

Congratulations to Shelby Life athletes who participate in the Special Olympics World Games! We are so proud.
