On March 6, the Shelby Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted eight new members, who qualified based on scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. The ceremony included a candle-lighting ceremony along with speeches from several of the current members, and a recitation of the NHS pledge.

The new members include: Paolo Manda, Brendan Clark, Reese Lee, Jadis Scarborough, Calista Calvery, Addison Stevenson, Addison Richman, and Zophia Toth. They were inducted by our current members. including Alexia Bohman, Penelope Heaton, Kobe Hooker, Adele Lamb, Mason Lamb, Michael Migneault, Parker Parsons, and Ivan Wickum. This signifies the passing of the torch as the current members graduate in just a few months.

“Our chapter has been inducting new members since April 27, 1939,” said, Shelby National Honor Society adviser Kristi Calvery.

Calvery became the adviser of the NHS after Eric Tokerud retired. As the adviser, Calvery described her adviser role as “I set up the induction and service projects with the community and also just keep tabs on all the members and make sure that we’re showing leadership and scholarship in the school.”

While there are several annual volunteer projects, one new project this year is helping to recycle the large amount of cardboard from the healthcare buildings. Calvery set up this cardboard recycling project after being contacted by Judy Richman. This project is headed by Ivan Wickum and Parker Parsons. They collect cardboard from Logan Health as well as the Assisted Living Facility and take it to the recycling container behind the Subway, the sandwich shop, said Ivan Wickum. When asked about why he recycled Wickum said, “I like to think that we are making a small difference, and if everybody does the same, then maybe the world will be a better place.” Through projects like this, Shelby’s National Honor Society members continue to make a positive impact in their community.
